12% of Smartphone Users 'Get' Geo-Social
23 September 2011
A Pew Internet Project stated recently that 12 percent of smartphone users are checking in via location-based apps. The research firm polled 688 smartphone users to arrive at the statistic, which was up from the 7 percent of online users who said during the same month last year that they used location-based services.
In its report, Pew notes that it used the term "geo-social" for the first time in its questioning. In looking at broader uses of location-based services, they found that 55% of smartphone owners use their phone to get directions, recommendations, or other information related to their present location. When it comes to other mobile activities, 59% of smartphone owners use their phone to access social networking sites, and 15% use their phone to access Twitter.
